Learning Objective: The objectives of this course are to teach students

  1. Writing conventions, practices and purposes of academic writing in the biological sciences
  2. Writing for different academic purposes
  3. Strategies for becoming ethical and responsible writers
  4. Grammatical and stylistic variations appropriate for academic writing

Content: This course introduces students to the conventions of academic writing using a project-based approach. It focuses on the structure and rhetorical moves of academic genres such as a critique, a proposal and an academic paper. Time is also set aside for students to discuss their work with their instructors.
