Programme Requirements

The period of study for the Double Major Programme (Honours) in Biomedical Sciences and BioBusiness is four academic years.

During the period of study for the Double Major Programme (Honours) in Biomedical Sciences and BioBusiness, a student must pursue such courses of study as may be prescribed by regulations made by the Academic Board on the recommendation of the School of Biological Sciences.

For successful completion of the programme and be eligible for graduation, students are required to fulfil the following requirements:

  1. Students must complete two (2) categories of requirements, totalling at least 139 Academic Units (AUs):
    • Major Requirements - 45 AUs for Biomedical Sciences Major and  45 AUs for BioBusiness Major
    • Final Year Project + Professional Internship + Professional career development - 24 AUs
    • General Education Requirements - 25 AUs
  2. Students must complete a total of 45 AUs of courses listed under curriculum webpage. The 45 AUs BioBusiness courses fall under the Core and Major Prescribed Elective (MPE) category.
  3. To have gained a pass grade in all the major and general education requirement courses as determined by the School of Biological Sciences; and
  4. Fulfilled other requirements as may be prescribed by the Academic Board.

 * For greater relevance to the industry, students are encouraged to take up BioBusiness-related projects, e.g. based on ideas generated through work done through BS3006 or BBIP Entrepreneurship Project, or market and product analysis within companies they were attached to during Professional Internship (a model adopted from CBS practice with Danish companies). Nevertheless, students who would like to have hands-on training in laboratory-based research for bio-product development careers are open to choose such options.

COURSES OF STUDY
The courses of study and the distribution of courses for Double Major Programme (Honours) in Biomedical Sciences and BioBusiness will be determined by the School of Biological Sciences with the approval from the University.
Each course will be assigned a certain number of Academic Units (AUs) as determined by the University. The distribution of the courses of study and the associated number of AUs are shown in the tables below.

There are five compulsory components in the curriculum:

Major Core courses (Major-Core)
Major Core courses are offered throughout the programme of study. They are foundation courses designed to provide essential training in the fundamental life sciences and business.

Major Prescribed Elective courses (Major-PE)
Major-PE courses provide students with opportunities to explore specialized areas of Biomedical Sciences and BioBusiness in more depth and intensity. The students may select their courses of study according to their own interests and career goals.

General Education Requirement: Core courses (GER-Core)
The GER-Core courses are specified by the School as being essential to train today’s Science graduates, covering areas such as communication and environmental sustainability.

General Education Requirement: Prescribed Elective courses (GER-PE)
Students undertaking the Bachelor of Science in Biomedical Sciences programme are required to read and pass GER Prescribed Electives from a range of areas. The number of AUs to be read in each area is specified by the School and in the table below. Students have the flexibility to choose the semester which they will read the individual courses.

General Education Requirement: Unrestricted Elective courses (GER-UE)
Double Major B.Sc programme in Biomedical Sciences and BioBusiness students are required to read and pass 6 AUs of GER-UE. Students may select to read any courses from the list of UEs offered by all Schools within the University. Students have the flexibility to choose the semester of which they will read the individual courses.
