SBS Safety

Workplace Safety and Health considerations are reasonably practicable means to provide a safe workplace and healthy environment to all staff, partners, students and visitors in the School of Biological Sciences (SBS), Nanyang Technological University (NTU).
This webpage serves to provide readers with information on workplace safety in SBS, especially within research and teaching laboratories. This is important because in a laboratory setting, there are physical, chemical, biological, and radiation hazards and risks involved. Thus SBS places strict demand on its community members to follow proper workplace safety practises.

SBS safety policy is mandatory to all SBS community members. They are required to attend safety trainings, briefings and orientations before they are permitted to start any laboratory practical classes and activities. All laboratory personnel including post-graduate students are provided additional training programmes to meet their specific needs. In addition, undergraduate students are required to participate in online safety courses available in NTULearn before they start their lab attachment and final year project (FYP).

Our school works closely with NTU Office of Health, Safety and Emergency (OHSE) to observe workplace safety and SBS community health and well-being. We adopt and improve on workplace safety guidelines, manuals, work practices and procedures, rules and regulations in line with OHSE requirement. It is important that all SBS community members and visitors working in SBS to familiarize themselves with SBS safety policies and other related information for any work activities.

SBS Safety Information
The specific rules and recommendations related to nature of work, possible hazards and control measures are given in the comprehensive manuals developed by the school.
The Office of Health, Safety and Emergency also provides safety information and the university standard operating procedures on its website

Safety requires all staff members and students to observe correct procedures and practices and to accept their part of responsibility to protect themselves, their fellow workers and school property.
